Head Lice And Children

August 27, 2008

Head lice, the very mention of them are enough to get most people scratching. In the next few weeks children of all ages will start heading back to school which will be shortly followed by a mass outbreak of these hair based parasites.

Luckily we’ve moved on from the idea that only children with dirty hair can catch lice. Clean hair or dirty hair, head lice don’t really care. As long as there’s enough hair to scuttle through and a nice warm scalp to feed on, head lice are perfectly happy.

There’s not much you can do to prevent your child catching head lice if they come into contact with someone who’s got them. It takes only a few seconds of head contact for the lice to transfer from one head to another. This is why girls are more likely to catch them than boys – girls like to huddle up with their heads close together as they share secrets.

If you know there are head lice about then you can try and warn them to avoid getting their head too close to anyone else’s but they’ll probably have forgotten the warning by the next day. Being vigilant and checking the hair with a head lice comb is probably a better tactic. By using early head lice removal you can prevent an infestation getting hold.

If you find any lice don’t forget to check your entire family including yourself. Although children are the most likely to catch head lice that doesn’t mean that adults are immune from these parasites.

There are plenty of over the counter and home remedies for head lice out there but if you are having real troubling eradicating head lice then have a word with your doctor who may be able to prescribe some stronger head lice treatments.
